▶ Favourite fic written this year
Hard choice to make because I've written more than a few Jihyos and Seulgis this year but I think the first time is always the hardest and I really wrote outside my comfort zone with this. So, the bigger the pain, the sweeter it remains.
▶ Favourite fic written this year....everyone's allowed a second favourite
I didn't write it this year, per se, but there's no way I leave this one out. It's one of the most rewarding things I've written in terms of getting instant validation of my headcanons from various Suchwita episodes, and just. I love writing idolverse explorations, I have to pick d minus zero or welcome the missing patterns of rain, yes I'm cheating.
▶ Favourite titles used this year
stuck in talking cinema light for which thank you to Fall Out Boy, I think this is the best I've used their song in a title. And also wherever we are is a shore, from W.S. Merwin, because it is the line of the poem which inspired the whole fic.
▶ Favourite dialogue snippets
From the bigger the pain, the sweeter it remains:
Seulgi stalls and then continues.“Would you still have wanted me if you could have had me without the thrill of a theft? If you didn't get to steal something every time I let you inside me?”
“Unnie.” Jihyo laughs and then clears her throat before continuing. “Remember what you told me the first time you taught me how to drive? When we borrowed Nayeon unnie’s family car and I stalled it every practice because I was too scared of denting it?”
“Drive it like you stole it?” Seulgi asks in disbelief.
From wherever we are is a shore:
“What about the great Xu Minghao-nim? What does he want?”
“Us, water, sunshine. Rain. And you.” Minghao answers immediately, his thoughts no longer a fleeting shadow but a hand, his hand, reaching out all the way across the breadth of the boat to touch Jungkook’s jaw.
Jungkook grins. “So mostly just…elemental things.”
Minghao grins back, open-mouthed and giddy, “Yes. You’d fit right in between them.”
▶ Favourite paragraphs
From wherever we are is a shore:
Minghao barks out a laugh, because what else can he do? Where would you go seeking water, if not to a well?
Does a river not wet your ankles when it laps up to you, simply because a river is a river and you are you, dry ankles anchored on land merely in anticipation of its eager touches?
From our nights/our hearts:
The back alley is littered with cigarette butts and Heeseung feels like if there weren’t a mask as well as a thick scarf covering his nose, he’d smell it too; the stench of frustration and relief and the bittersweetness of the only ten minutes afforded to people working unending hours as they stood outside and peered up at the sky.
It’s a beautiful sight, no doubt, but Heeseung, too, is no different from the people he only knows through the remnants of their rote smoke breaks: bitter even when he's sweet.
From elegies to the exit wound:
It should be strange to make love on the night that they are to part ways but isn’t.
Perhaps all they’ve ever been is this: slaves to the heat between two bodies that only understood the language that spoke in touch.
Love, but only the way that animals do it.
Jihyo surrenders to it.
From every look is like a mirror:
Seulgi knows well enough how to make use of the looking that longs without demanding anything in return; how many ‘mistaken’ times she is permitted to look back so that it’s still surprise he receives with an open mouth, whenever and however it comes, rather than the sour taste of premeditation that sticks to the back of his teeth.
Also from the same fic:
Seulgi has kissed too many disappointing men to allow a new man’s kiss to make a hole in her heart anymore and Jungkook, well, she’s not his first kiss either. And unlike Wonwoo, he has learnt too quickly and too young how to bite down the sting before letting the world know he, too, was a thing that bled and hurt.
▶ Favourite POVs to write
I spent a lot of time with both Jungkook and Jihyo this year. With Jungkook, it felt more like a homecoming, where I turned to him whenever I wanted to explore the emotions I tend to write with most often - grief, depression and the like. Jihyo was more interesting because through her I explored sapphic relationships to an extent, and in way, I really had never imagined I would be able to. But Jihyo was one of the harder ones to write. I think the few short times I wrote Seokmin I had a lot of fun letting him be all kinds of messy and mean and hurt.

▶ Longest fic
elegies to the exit wound. 6k, a feat that still feels unbelievable to me with how hard writing was this year. Like I've been having writing blocks like catching a cold and that I wrote 6k, a very hard and trying 6k (smut my mortal enemy) is...a big deal.

▶ Most under-the-radar
Honestly, everything I've written this year. My fics have barely been read by more than 2-3 people. I'm picking the one that surprises me the most, by its numbers - the wind blows without saying a word.
▶ Hardest to write
Oh most definitely elegies to the exit wound. It was already gonna be an uphill battle trying to write a fic that relied so heavily on smut in its key moments, as I find smut very, very difficult to write. On top of that I was obsessed with incorporating Carson's Glass Essay into the fic, structurally, and yeah. The whole process was like pulling teeth and I can hardly fathom that I didn't abandon it.
▶ Funnest to write
Yet again my collab fic with lilli for wren's birthday, that is, still a monster (not a monster). How can there be any else? I excavated the idea for a sequel I had three years ago and Lilli basically revived it and in a way that made writing it easy for me too. Also, I just never take lightly how easy it is to let her into my thoughts and my wips, and how writing together with her almost feels like breathing. If breathing was the most fun you had all year, that is.

I have to mention ao3 kkulecru who has left me the kindest compliments on possibly every single fic i've posted, like i appreciate them so, so much. as well as ao3 warmmachine who left me some mammoth comments that really kept me going.
This gold tier comment on you'll never make it through the night, with someone saying this: "i am in the library and there was a fire as i was reading this and i got out but then they let us back in after the smoke cleared and i continued reading !!!! u reminded me of jk so i posted an ig story with bts fire in the background"
And then on elegies to the exit wound: "im not sure if ive ever read a fic where a character starts rimming another and its made me go wow.. they really Do love each other"
And lastly, on stuck in talking cinema light someone said "I knew you and your writing from a couple of bangtan fics, especially the hyyh taejoon one. and so I had just gotten into SHINee, hadn't read any fic yet and knew very sparsely of the minkey dynamics. I saw somebody repost your saathiya and I wanted to give them a shot because I knew your writing was amazing."
They read minkey for the first time because of me?!! That's surreal.
▶ Any surprises while writing this year
The obvious is the big fat E rating with actual, not just implied sex writing. Like I said, it's hard, I don't know how I did it. The other is breaking into the infidelity tag. Now that one I really didn't anticipate doing, nor did I anticipate doing it in a way that would actually land and read well. Enough that I'm open to writing it again. I think I just wrote quite a few toxic characters in ways that were believable to me and I wouldn't have presumed myself capable of it before.
▶ Other writing thoughts
Being in a constant state of writing block as well as the dwindling state of readership in these areas made me much kinder to my own fics, I think. I didn't write particularly long and planned or short and intentional fics but I am more or less satisfied with my writing in a good majority of my fics from last year. I didn't hit 2023's wordcount, which was never gonna happen, nor did I hit its stats but I think my writing was bolder and explorative in some cases while also finding fresh ways to write the themes that I always fall back upon writing.
▶ Writing goals/WIP ideas for next year
Fic commentaries was a goal for last year that I didn't achieve so that stays up here.
More gen fic and more ggfic I definitely achiveved. I've written more genfic than any other category this year, which is both surprising to me AND fills me with a lot of joy.
There is a lot in terms of themes and fandoms I want to explore but fics that I absolutely must get done this year are my vmon fic for ao3 disillusioned and my kyungsoo fic that I promised user Xln71 when they won my giveaway.
And now *jazz hands* for my favourite part of this whole thing.

⧐ Object Permanence by rainhat - 스물다섯 스물하나 | Twenty Five Twenty One (TV) (i finally read it omg what a journey)
